Last Saturday completed my first race of the season and boy was it a little ridiculous. The 13th Annual PHUNT 25k/50k took place on January 16th at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area. I heard such great things about PHUNT over the past few years and after a few nudges from friends, I decided to sign up. While it was sold out by the time I decided to move forward with it, I didn’t have to stay on the wait list long. PHUNT is one of the few races that I’ve come across where transferring registration is easy and they make every effort to try and have those on the wait list fill in the spots for runners who just can’t make it. I was very grateful for this. Continue reading

North Face Endurance Challenge DC 2015 50-Miler Recap – Stupid is as Stupid Does
Saturday, April 18, 2015 marked my third 50-miler race. I died a thousand deaths on that course on that hot humid day. Okay, so I don’t have to be so dramatic about it, but this was a tough one for me. I did everything wrong, and I knew I was doing it wrong, but I did it anyway. Stupid is as stupid does. I don’t understand why I couldn’t get my head in the game, perhaps it was because that I had such great runs after less than stellar training that I thought I could get away without proper nutrition, hydration, and pacing during the race. It’s a 50-miler for Christ sake…you HAVE to be diligent about all of those things. I wasn’t, I got lazy, perhaps cocky, and I suffered. Continue reading
GUEST BLOG: Jamie Hart’s Glass City Marathon Race Recap
Jamie completed his first marathon on April 26th at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio. I have featured Jamie before in my Runners Inspiring Runners series and I’m proud to see him accomplish something that a lot of people wouldn’t have thought was possible. He is a fighter and continues to be an inspiration to many people and I’m honored that he accepted my request to be a guest blogger.
Goals and dreams start small. As runners we know this, it starts with our first step out the door. Those initial steps whether it is to run for a minute straight, be able to run a mile without stopping, compete in a 5K or just to run to be at peace, alone with our thoughts. Whatever the initial reason or goal we set out to accomplish, as runners we seem to always strive for more. The pinnacle of running for most, something that many dream of and even fewer strive for would be to run in a marathon. It is known as the true endurance test of both mind and body. Something that after two years of running decided to put myself up to the test and the scene of my journey would take place at Toledo, Ohio’s Glass City Marathon over the weekend. Continue reading
Just Call Me Joe (Philadelphia Marathon Recap – Part 1)
I hate to break this up into two parts, but there’s just so much to write. And if you have a short span of attention like me, you would probably stop half way through any way, so there it is, Part 1 of 2 of the Philadelphia Marathon Recap.
Earlier this week when I told people that I just ran a marathon, they assumed I was talking about Marine Corps. When I say, “No, I just ran Philly.” I get the “Wha-whaaat??” Call us crazy, but we did. I got a text message from my friend Kendra the day after MCM which said, “I wanna run Philly.” And that was the beginning of our mad quest to secretly run a marathon without letting anyone know, well, with the exception of our families.
