HAT RUN 50K Training – Week 8 (#MEGSMILES)

Today we went out to Cromwell Valley Park for our 2 hour run. Today, I ran to honor Meg Menzies who was tragically killed on January 13th by a drunk driver while she was out for her morning run. Meg was a mother of three young children, a Boston Marathoner, and an avid runner. Today, I ran 7 miles for someone I didn’t know but had the same passion as I do – running.

Amy and I were at the back of the pack again, or as she calls it “the caboose.” It was really tough getting started. The air seemed particularly thin and both of us had a hard time catching our breath. It took a little while, but once we finally got into our groove, we were good to go. I really do enjoy running with Amy. She and I have the same “happy pace” and it comforts me to know that at this pace, she has completed the HAT Run 50K  with no problems.

We ran for two hours together chit chatting along the way. We laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. It was another good run.

For me, there was no mention of Meg. For me, I soaked in everything for her. The burn in my thighs, the burn in my lungs. The crisp thin air, the sound of the crunching leaves. The sound of our voices and laughter. All the images, sounds, and feelings of this mornings run to honor a fallen runner. These two hours belonged to her.

week 7

It’s sad to believe that someone’s stupid irresponsible actions could take all of this away from someone. And it’s sad to think that those children will grow up without her. It angers me. Unfortunately, this tragedy happens quite frequently. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Rest in peace Meg.

HAT Run 50K Training – Week 6 & 7 (I’m Still Here! Sun, Trails, and Doubt)

I’m back! It’s been a little while since I blogged, but I’m back. I really hope you enjoyed last week’s Runners Inspiring Runners series. I’ve got a few more lined up, so be on the look out for them!

While the entire Mid Atlantic was dealing with the “Polar Vortex,” I slipped away to Jamaica.  I know. I suck. Who wants to deal with subzero temperatures?!  I brought my running gear with me, but the closest thing that I did to any type of physical activity was a sorry attempt to do yoga on the beach…

yogaIt was pretty pathetic and I wasn’t successful. But who cares?!?! I was in JAMAICA!!! I spent most of my time just relaxing without a care in the world. I didn’t think about training with the exception of wanting to run every hill and trail I saw off of the resort, and I didn’t think about eating right…okay, I ate a lot of healthy foods, but I sure didn’t skimp out on dessert!

and Happy Feet!

I got back late last Friday and was prepared to head out on Saturday for a 3.5 hour training run out on the trails. But as the night went on, I knew that I was just way to exhausted from the travel to have a successful run. Besides, we were expecting rain…a lot of it, so I contacted Reds to see if she would run the long run with me on Sunday and I slept in. I was so glad I did. I heard that the trails were flooded and the rain was relentless. The group got lost and it turned into a 4 hour run. If I hadn’t been traveling the night before, I would’ve probably had fun on that run…with the exception of the mud. HA!

Sunday Reds and I headed out for our run. I stayed up on my own two feet and had such a great time. It’s really true when I hear runners say that running trails make you feel like I kid. I truly felt like a kid out there just running through the trails with a big ol’ cheesy smile on my face. Reds even had time to swing from a vine. I was afraid I’d break the dang thing.

We also trespassed on a historic site to take pictures, because that’s how we roll.

It was a good run. No, it was a great run!  Monday I hit the weights and Tuesday I was back at the track for speed and hill work. That’s when the doubt started to sink back in. I struggled and I struggled bad. Well, actually I did pretty well for the slow pace that I am, but the mental monster of being at the back of the back was tormenting me. I couldn’t keep up and I didn’t skimp out on the repetitions because I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the group. Our workout was as follows:

  • Warm up run to the track
  • 1200 doing the following – 100 easy (walk), 100 medium (60-70% max effort), 100 hard (80-90% max effort) Repeat until time is up.
  • 400 hard on track (5K pace), then hard effort out of the track up to the parking lot and up the hill, turn around and follow back to the track.  Hard effort (75-90% max effort) up the hills, recovery down the hills
  • Repeat until time is up.
  • Cool down back to the car

While some runners ran the loop 4 times, I managed 3. It really got to me and I emailed Coach Marie to tell her that it’s unnerving being at the back of the pack sometimes. I asked her if the thought I was too slow to run an ultra and if going 0 to 50K in two years was too much to expect. I also told her I had no plans on quitting…once I’m committed, I don’t quit. She assured me that I was fine and that I would get stronger. She also reminded me of how I felt at this point during my first marathon training last year. She’s right and I’m doing my best to fight that stupid mental tormentor. My competitive spirit can be such a bitch sometimes. But, I have to put it into perspective. Not many people go from 0 miles to 50k in two years. Heck, not many people even attempt or think about attempting an ultramarathon. I have to practice what I preach. Believe that I can and I will.

HAT 50K Training – New Year’s Day Training Run (Trying to Make It Come Together and Trying to Eat Clean)

Couldn’t have started the New Year off any better way than a run on the trails with my training group! The trails were Goldilocks…you know not too muddy, not to frozen…just right! So was the weather, well as nice as you can get in the winter. I went out ready to do this and then BAM!

I'm okay collage Continue reading

HAT Run 50K Training – Week 3 (Going All In!)

Okay, Okay! I know I’m late in posting this weekend’s training, but ’tis this season to be caught up in the holiday bustle. Actually, I was just too worn out to move.

This weekend’s training started Friday with an intense upper body workout with an old friend of mine. I was unable to meet up with John, so I met up with my old personal trainer/friend who does competition body building. Three days later, I’m just now able to touch the top of my head…ow. It was good to see him and switch it up a little, and I’m grateful that he let me tag along so I wouldn’t miss out on training due to scheduling conflicts. But up until about an hour ago, I was cussing him out under my breath anytime I had to lift my arms more than six inches above my waist. Continue reading

HAT Run 50K – Week 2 (The Slush Can Suck It!)

Okay, let’s try this again. I initially wrote this post on Sunday in a Word document and as I was ready to transfer it over to WordPress, my laptop crashed. And I don’t mean, just shut down…I mean the hard drive completely blew up. It also happened to my spare laptop. Both have been sent back to HP for repairs and I’m glad they’re still under warranty.

Anyway, my post was a little longer when I originally wrote it, but I have since forgotten most of it. It’s amazing how just a little bit of time makes you forget details that you thought were initially important. Lucky you, this is going to be short.

Sunday’s run was great, except for the stupid slush. Ya’ll know I hate wet feet, but what I hate worse than wet feet is freezing cold wet feet. Thirteen minutes in of schlepping through the slush, both feet were wet and cold. I eventually couldn’t feel my feet but my SmartWool socks did a decent job of keeping me from getting frostbite. It’s funny, I was telling some of the folks in my training group that this training is going to knock the prissy little girl right out of me. Last week I was “ew” or “gross” with every muddy step, this week it was more like “ew” or “gross” with every other slushy muddy step. Progress. Continue reading

What’s the Difference Between Regular Running Shoes and Trail Shoes?

Believe it or not, I really had a hard time finding a lot of information in comparing regular running shoes and trail shoes. When I was fitted for my trail shoes, I asked Coach Marie, what’s the difference? I also noticed that people debated on whether or not you really needed trail running shoes. Being a first time trail runner and having worn my regular running shoes on the rocky, rooty, trails, I say YES! If you are running on trails with rocks, roots, a lot of elevation changes, get trail shoes! If you are simply sticking to a dirt trail, I think it’s fine to wear your regular shoes. HAT Run 50K – Week 1 (A little bit of mud, a shoe full of water, and a little piece of heaven.)

Here we go folks! It’s TRAINING SEASON! Can I get a “hell yeah”?! Today was the first official training run for the HAT Run 50k. Being the clutz that I am, I was hesitant (and still am) about taking my non-graceful self off the roads and on to the trails. Thankfully, while I had some very close calls, and would-be wipe outs saved by the runner in front of me (thanks Reds & Frank), I actually did okay today. Trail running is not easy! My butt is still burning from all of the hills this morning and I know it’s just going to get worse from here. Wait, let me rephrase that…It’s going to get more challenging from here 🙂 But, I’m okay with that, ’cause by the end of the season, I’m going to have a rock hard ass! Continue reading

Friday’s Tip of the Week – Myrtl Routine (Improving Agility)

As you know, I’ve started trail running. I’m highly uncoordinated and am very worried about falling on my face or breaking an ankle out on the trails. In my search for exercises to help me with my agility, I came across the Myrtl Routine in Runner’s World. The Myrtl Routine “improves your range of motion and adds agility you’ll need for the trail.” Now, I’ve done these exercises before, but never thought that they could help with running. Guess I’m going to have to add this to the mix!

Oh Crap, What Did I Get Myself Into? (HAT Pre-training trail run)

While that HAT Run training doesn’t officially start until next week, our coach gave us a schedule to get us acclimated to what’s to come. So, this morning Reds and I decided to head up to Susquehanna State Park and give it a go on the course to see what it was about. When we got to what we thought was our starting point, the “Susquehanna Ridge Trail” which marked with red signs, this is what we saw… Continue reading

Beast Mode – ON!

While some folks got up early yesterday for some Black Friday shopping, I decided to work off the 5,738 calories that I ate during Thanksgiving dinner instead. I was going to turn the beast mode on! Got up at 5:30 am, headed to the gym to train with my trainer and then set off to meet a friend for a trail run. I was supposed to meet her at 8:30, but as I left the gym, I got a message from her that she wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t make it. Continue reading
