The Evolution of Crazy

I can’t believe it’s been a year last month since I started this blog! Looking back, I have shared so much with you and once again, I’m sorry I haven’t been around so much recently. As I sat back and reflected on the writings of my blog, I couldn’t help but go back to the beginning. You know, when crazy started…this crazy thing in my life called running. How does it happen? How did I start running and end up running ultramarathons? Well, I went back in time to see how crazy began. Continue reading

The North Face Endurance Challenge #ECSDC 50-Mile Race Recap – Part 1: The Highlights

Writing this blog seems to be harder than running 50-miles. There’s so much to tell you, but I really don’t want to bore you with the details, but I want to tell you everything! I’d actually be better off writing this:

Dear Diary,

I ran 50 miles.

It was awesome.

Will miss my toenails.

Love, me

I have a draft written that’s already well over 1400 words and I’m only at mile 15. I could turn this into a novel if I wanted to, so I think for now, I’ll break this up in parts and start with just the highlights and then follow up with details later. Continue reading

8 Days Until Race Day

There’s been so much that I have been wanting to share with you as far as how my training has been going, but I just haven’t found the time to sit and write. I blog in my head all day long, while I’m at work, while I’m training, while I’m sleeping and I just haven’t found the hour or so that I need to get those thoughts down on virtual paper. I have about 4 or 5 drafts started, but nothing complete. Continue reading

North Face Endurance Challenge 50-Miler Training Weeks 4 – 6 Part 1 (The Marathon)

Can the title of this blog post get any longer? I really have to find a better way of doing this. Better yet, I really need to find the time to write more often. Apparently training for an ultra marathon takes up a lot of time, and this is only a 50-miler. I can’t imagine the time I would need to put in to train for a 100-miler. I’m going to try and capture everything in a 3 part series for weeks 4 – 6: The Marathon, The Half Marathon, and the Last Long Run. Continue reading

874 Days Since Day 1 – Who Knew?

It’s been 874 days since I first “unofficially” walked/jogged my first race, the Celtic Solstice 5 miler. I never thought there would come a day in those 874 days where I would ‘forget’ that I had a race  and that race was a full marathon. All week I’ve had that “oh yeah…I’m running the Delaware Marathon on Sunday” moment when trying to make plans for the weekend. And who would’ve thought that it would take me 826 days, to go from 0 miles to an ultramarathon. And I never thought that in 28 days, I would run my first 50 miler. If my calculations are correct, that would mean that it took 902 days to go from running 0 to running 50 miles. Continue reading

North Face Endurance Run 50-Miler Training Week’s 2 – 3 (The Good, Bad, and Almost Ugly)

Has it really been two weeks since I last blogged? I can’t believe how fast this is going. I’ve also realized that my “weeks” are mis-numbered, so I’m actually heading into week 4.  The past two weeks has had it’s ups and downs. I’m finding it hard to keep up with the training schedule and my asthma had decided that it doesn’t want to play nice. Continue reading

Monday’s Catch Up #LinkyParty (3/3/14)

Monday's Catch Up LinkyParty

A friend of mine who writes for Fit Foodie Runs introduced me to the concept of a LinkyParty. She has been blogging for years and is my go to person when it comes to figuring out the in’s and out’s of blogging. Over the past few months, I have followed and read some pretty amazing blogs and I do try to share them from time to time…also tried to “re-blog” once, but I don’t know if that worked the way I thought it would. In talking with Fit Foodie Runs, I think perhaps a #LinkyParty is the way to go so share some of my favorite posts that I read this week and a great way to share YOUR posts with others. HAT 50K Training – Week 15 Recap (Kicking Goose Turds Because Running Sucks)

Have you ever had a run that made you want to quit the sport of running forever? That was yesterday and a little bit today. We desperately needed to get a good long continuous long run and went out for 22 miles on the road of the BWI Trail. I was excited to run someplace new, but I had no idea that by mile 10 I was ready to give up the sport of running forever. Mile 10 felt like mile 20 for me. My hips and knees hurt and I ached all over. My legs were so tired that when I went to use the port-a-potty I ended up peeing on the back of my leg and shoe because I couldn’t get the right hovering position, and ya’ll know you don’t sit in one of those things. I knew this was going to be one of those runs where I will have to dig deep to keep going. I had to make my mind push my body to get through it….had to find my inner bitch. Continue reading

HAT 50K Training – Week 14, part 2 (Boy I love being a runner!)

Another great run in the books! Because of yesterday’s snafu, today the target was 10 – 12 miles. Since a few of us decided to take it to Loch Raven where there were hills…oh the hills…we ended up with 10 glorious easy miles!  Those who know Loch Raven will appreciate that we ran up the “Dam” hill twice. Despite a few little areas that still had patches of ice, the road was pretty much clear. The sun came out, we had brunch and of course the obligatory Bloody Mary. Boy do I love being a runner and the friends I’ve made since I became a runner. I even love saying the word run. Run, runner, running! Continue reading

HAT 50K Training – Week 14 – (Well, that didn’t go as planned.)

Today’s goal of 4.5 hours (approx 20 – 22 miles) did not happen. And it’s not that we didn’t try…we tried really hard! After an hour of schlepping through ice and thick crusty snow at a pace of a 26 minute mile, we decided to take it to the road. It was way to dangerous and it wasn’t worth yet. Yes, yours truly took a spill on the icy path (and I wasn’t the only one), but I only ended up with a little bit of an ice burn or is it ice rash? Whatever it’s called it wasn’t bad but definitely annoying. Continue reading
