This weekend’s mileage for our long run was between 16 – 17 miles, so I had my heart set on 17. Even posted on Facebook that I was running 17, cause you know you MUST do it if you post it. But at 16, I was done and I was fine with it. Well, I wasn’t actually totally fine with it, but fine enough to stop and not whine too much about it. My Garmin had died, my legs were tired, and I wanted brunch. I’m pretty sure I could’ve pushed through to the 17, but after running 4 yesterday, I decided I didn’t need to…brunch was on the brain instead. Continue reading
White Marsh 4 Miler – She did it!
Today I ran with my sister in her first race ever! It was a perfect day for a race! No humidity, crisp air, and just the right mixtures of sun and clouds. We got there early since we didn’t know what to expect with parking and wanted enough time to warm up. We did the White Marsh 4 Miler and she nailed it. She ran the whole thing without stopping and I’m so proud of her as she only started training a couple of weeks ago. Talk about overachiever! Continue reading
Slower vs. Faster?
As I sit here gathering my race stats information for my new Race Stats page, I noticed how significantly slower I’ve been running this season. And I think of some of the problems that I’ve had and I flashback to an appointment that I had with my podiatrist when I was having pain on the top of my foot. I remember boasting about how I went from 0 to 26.2 in a short amount of time and that I had planned on picking up speed this year. When I told him I did my first marathon in 4:56, he, who was also a runner, said to me “was it worth it?” And I looked at him. Then he proceeded to tell me that he rarely sees elite runners for pain and injuries because they were fast. He said that the runners he typically sees are slower runners because they spend more time on their feet. Fast runners spend less time on their feet and therefore have less injuries.
I wanted to punch him in the face. Continue reading
Runners Inspiring Runners – Kevin – Athletes Serving Athletes
Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of running the NFL Kickoff 5K in Baltimore with Athletes Serving Athletes as a Wingman. I was originally paired with Ryan, who was unable to attend, so I was paired up with Kevin instead. It was an amazing experience! Team Kevin consisted of me, Kim, and our Team Captain (I think Doug was his name) and Kim and I took turns as Wingmen as we ran the 5K course around M&T Bank Stadium and on to the 50 yard line. MCM Training – Week 12 Track (Time Trials and an Unexpected Patriotic Moment)
Last night were two mile time trials. I did a 9:09 for my first mile and an 18:04 for my second…negative split! YES! Using the McMillian Calculator (https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/), it looks like my marathon race pace is set to be 10:59. If I’m on target, I should finish my marathon 4:47:38. Ok, so it’s a far cry from doing a 4:00 marathon, but when I set the goal of shaving an hour off of my time at the end of last year’s marathon, as Kendra said, I had “Marathon Goggles” on. It’s amazing what adrenaline does after you finish your first marathon. I hope you all have or will have the experience to know how that feels.
Last night at the track, the college had some sort of game going on. At the beginning of their game, they played and sang our National Anthem. I was surprised and touched that EVERYONE at track practice stopped where they were, faced our American flag, put their hand over their heart and listened. I looked around and smiled…folks scattered around the track loop just standing there honoring our country. I don’t know why I was surprised, but I loved it. Continue reading
Slacklace Review and Giveaway!
FINALLY! I’ve been waiting to do this review for a month. Soon after I received the Slacklace shoelaces, I ended up with a calf injury before I could even use them. Although I’ve used these in the past, I wanted to give them a fresh review, so I waited. I was first introduced to Slacklaces at a race last year and I fell in love with all of the bright colors (they have 13 to offer) that I just had to accent my shoes with them while I was training for the Baltimore Marathon.
Slacklace are elastic shoelaces by Yankz! that eliminate banding and pressure points. What I like about Slacklace are the bright colors and the ease of slipping your shoe off and on without having to untie your shoe. Because the top of my feet arch up, I already have to lace my shoes a little differently to alleviate pressure on the top of my feet, however because these laces lay flat, I find that I get additional relief by using them.
Here are some tips to ensure a great fit:
- When you lace your shoe with Slacklaces, do it with your foot in the shoe and don’t tighten them too much. I found it easier to tighten them after I laced them to the top than an it was to loosen them.
- Again, don’t tighten them too much. You don’t need to. I made the mistake of a last minute adjustment right before the 20-miler to tighten my right shoe “just in case” and I was wrong to do so. Ended up with a little blister where my tongue rubbed the top of my foot. My left shoe was perfect. I should’ve left the right one alone.
- Make sure you get the right size. Slacklaces come in different lengths, so make sure you get the right length for your shoe, otherwise, you’ll end up tying them too tight. Don’t forget to account for different shoe types. For example, minimalist shoe vs. high tops.
- Have fun with the colors! Why not have one color on one shoe and a different color on the other?
Slacklaces come in kid sizes and adult sizes and run about $6, plus shipping and can be found at http://www.slacklace.com
And we have a Giveaway! Yankz! were kind enough to offer 3 pairs of Slacklace to So What I Run readers! All 3 pairs are a size Small which will fit average Children’s size 4 to adult size 9 shoes. Click on the link below to enter. Although I have purple, yellow, and lavender, I cannot guarantee the color selection that you receive.
MCM Training – Week 12 (Long run – 10 Miles of Peacefulness)
What a beautiful run this morning! The air was crisp, humidity low, and view spectacular (we’ll talk about the view in just a moment).
MCM Training – Week 11 wrap up (You can do what you set your mind to)
We’re winding down on Week 11’s training and I can’t believe that we’re more than half way through the program. After this weekend’s 20 miler (and a total of 26 miles in 3 days), I took it easy for the rest of the week. I had a wonderful 5K race on Wednesday and as soon as I get permission from parties involved, I will publish that post. Earlier in the week, I took my sister out for a training run and she was able to run almost a mile and a half without stopping. That was Monday. Today, she was able to run 4 miles without stopping. Must be in the genes or it could be that mom raised a couple of very determined and driven girls, but either way I am SO proud of her. She just started running a couple of weeks ago and has made great progress. Not even the screws in her knees are holding her back (although it is a little bothersome). Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 11 (NCR 20 Miler)
As I sit here trying to write this blog, my mind and body are mush. Just added another 20-miler under my belt and I feel like I’ve been hit by a Mack truck. When I did this race last year, I swore I would never run again. I wanted to drop out of the Baltimore Marathon and sell all of my gear. It didn’t help that my husband allowed me to fall asleep with my legs propped up at a 90 degree angle on a wall only to wake up with stiff pretzel legs as my legs flopped over during my nap. This year, while the race was harder on my body, I don’t have those “screw running” feelings. Not having those 4 long runs leading up to today’s 20 miler really made it harder, but with a little help from my friends, I finished. It wasn’t a pretty finish and it wasn’t a strong finish, but I finished. Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 10 Wrap-up (Track, Athletes Serving Athletes Training Run, & 20 Mile Prep)
I’m here! I’m here! Sorry, it’s been a pretty crazy week and I’ve slacked off on my blogging a little bit. Putting in 12 – 16 hour days at the office just doesn’t leave much time for writing. The few moments I have free are dedicated to eating, sleeping, and running. So, let’s catch up! Continue reading
