Currently in Baltimore, it’s a beautiful November morning, clear skies and a comfortable 65 degrees. The trees are turning and the colors of the leaves are just gorgeous! And what am I doing? After spending the morning at Patient First, I’m hunkered down in bed with a sinus infection, which started out as an innocent post-marathon cold. Now, I thought I was going to get sick before the marathon and I was lucky enough to ward that off. But, now I’ve succumbed to it. The problem is, my weak asthmatic lungs always feel the need to be included when I get sick. So my normal “sick” cycle is cold > sinus infection > bronchitis. Happens every time. Last time this happened was in January and I was down for three months, went through three cycles of prednisone, and missed the D.C. Rock and Roll Half Marathon. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN! Ultra marathon training will be coming up quickly and I need to make sure I’m cross training and getting some miles in before it starts. Continue reading

Is Running Like a Passionate Relationship?
You know when you first fall in love and you have those googly eyes and butterflies in your stomach? Everything revolves around your love and your spirit and soul feel so alive. When you think about this love, it’s an instant lift in your heart, an impromptu smile in your face, or a deep satisfying breath. When you first started running, did you feel this way about it or is it just me? Continue reading
To Ultra or Not to Ultra? That is the Question.
Just came back from an informational meeting about training for the HAT Run. The HAT Run (http://www.hatrun.com/) is a 50K trail ultramarathon in Maryland and it’s on my bucket list. There are only 500 spots, so entry to the race is by lottery only.
I really wanted to do an ultra in 2013, but it wasn’t in the cards for me, so I’m really anxious about running one in 2014. There are several reasons NOT to train for an ultra: Continue reading
Definition of a Marathon
Marathon
mar·a·thon
ˈmarəˌTHän/
noun: marathon; plural noun: marathons
- a long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 km)
Since I started running, I’ve heard some people refer to races as ‘marathons,’ and frankly, it irks me a little bit. As the definition above says, a marathon is “strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yards.” It is not a 5K, it is not a 10K, it is not an ultra. Continue reading
White Marsh 4 Miler – She did it!
Today I ran with my sister in her first race ever! It was a perfect day for a race! No humidity, crisp air, and just the right mixtures of sun and clouds. We got there early since we didn’t know what to expect with parking and wanted enough time to warm up. We did the White Marsh 4 Miler and she nailed it. She ran the whole thing without stopping and I’m so proud of her as she only started training a couple of weeks ago. Talk about overachiever! Continue reading
Slower vs. Faster?
As I sit here gathering my race stats information for my new Race Stats page, I noticed how significantly slower I’ve been running this season. And I think of some of the problems that I’ve had and I flashback to an appointment that I had with my podiatrist when I was having pain on the top of my foot. I remember boasting about how I went from 0 to 26.2 in a short amount of time and that I had planned on picking up speed this year. When I told him I did my first marathon in 4:56, he, who was also a runner, said to me “was it worth it?” And I looked at him. Then he proceeded to tell me that he rarely sees elite runners for pain and injuries because they were fast. He said that the runners he typically sees are slower runners because they spend more time on their feet. Fast runners spend less time on their feet and therefore have less injuries.
I wanted to punch him in the face. Continue reading
Runners Inspiring Runners – Becky C.
Today’s recovery run at Loch Raven was just ridiculously humid. So humid, that even my camera couldn’t focus on the picture I took below. If this is a sign of what kind of summer we have to look forward to, I may just have to move to Connecticut. I’m dreading the 15 – 20 mile training runs in the city. Guess we’ll have to start at 5am soon <sigh>.
MCM Training – Week 2 long run (11 miles)
FINALLY! A great training run! Things are starting to look up. I met with my group of running friends, we call ourselves The Six Pack, at the NCR trail at around 6:30AM. It’s been a while since the Six Pack ran as a whole, so it was great to have most of us together again. The only thing that kept this run from being perfect was our missing sole sister, Sunny. So, I guess today we were more of the Fab Five instead of the Six Pack. Hopefully we’ll all run together next week… GO SIX PACK! Continue reading
Baltimore Women’s Classic 5K 2013 – Meghan & Team Fancy Nancy
This past Sunday I had the honor of running the Baltimore Women’s Classic on team Fancy Nancy with a dear friend of mine, Meghan. The team was formed in honor of her mother, Nancy, who is a 5 year cancer survivor. Initially, I wanted to find out how she got involved with the BWC, but I ended up finding out more about how she became a runner. Below is my interview with her. Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 1 Tempo Run
Thursdays are my tempo run days. What is a tempo run? I couldn’t have defined it better than the link below:
“Definition: Tempo runs are an excellent way for runners to build speed and strength. They’re runs that are done at a steady effort level, usually just a little slower than your 10K race pace. Tempo runs help you develop your anaerobic or lactate threshold, which is critical for running faster. (http://running.about.com/od/runnersglossary/g/whatisatemporun.htm)”
Today our group was supposed to do a 4 mile tempo run for beginners and 5 – 6 for intermediates. Having had a crappy track workout on Tuesday, I decided to go with the 4 mile run on the “dreadmill.” It was obvious to me that I needed to get back to basics and work on my form and pace consistency. I’d let the treadmill take care of my pace while I concentrated on my form. Continue reading
