Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of running the NFL Kickoff 5K in Baltimore with Athletes Serving Athletes as a Wingman. I was originally paired with Ryan, who was unable to attend, so I was paired up with Kevin instead. It was an amazing experience! Team Kevin consisted of me, Kim, and our Team Captain (I think Doug was his name) and Kim and I took turns as Wingmen as we ran the 5K course around M&T Bank Stadium and on to the 50 yard line. MCM Training – Week 12 Track (Time Trials and an Unexpected Patriotic Moment)
Last night were two mile time trials. I did a 9:09 for my first mile and an 18:04 for my second…negative split! YES! Using the McMillian Calculator (https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/), it looks like my marathon race pace is set to be 10:59. If I’m on target, I should finish my marathon 4:47:38. Ok, so it’s a far cry from doing a 4:00 marathon, but when I set the goal of shaving an hour off of my time at the end of last year’s marathon, as Kendra said, I had “Marathon Goggles” on. It’s amazing what adrenaline does after you finish your first marathon. I hope you all have or will have the experience to know how that feels.
Last night at the track, the college had some sort of game going on. At the beginning of their game, they played and sang our National Anthem. I was surprised and touched that EVERYONE at track practice stopped where they were, faced our American flag, put their hand over their heart and listened. I looked around and smiled…folks scattered around the track loop just standing there honoring our country. I don’t know why I was surprised, but I loved it. Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 12 (Long run – 10 Miles of Peacefulness)
What a beautiful run this morning! The air was crisp, humidity low, and view spectacular (we’ll talk about the view in just a moment).
MCM Training – Week 11 wrap up (You can do what you set your mind to)
We’re winding down on Week 11’s training and I can’t believe that we’re more than half way through the program. After this weekend’s 20 miler (and a total of 26 miles in 3 days), I took it easy for the rest of the week. I had a wonderful 5K race on Wednesday and as soon as I get permission from parties involved, I will publish that post. Earlier in the week, I took my sister out for a training run and she was able to run almost a mile and a half without stopping. That was Monday. Today, she was able to run 4 miles without stopping. Must be in the genes or it could be that mom raised a couple of very determined and driven girls, but either way I am SO proud of her. She just started running a couple of weeks ago and has made great progress. Not even the screws in her knees are holding her back (although it is a little bothersome). Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 11 (NCR 20 Miler)
As I sit here trying to write this blog, my mind and body are mush. Just added another 20-miler under my belt and I feel like I’ve been hit by a Mack truck. When I did this race last year, I swore I would never run again. I wanted to drop out of the Baltimore Marathon and sell all of my gear. It didn’t help that my husband allowed me to fall asleep with my legs propped up at a 90 degree angle on a wall only to wake up with stiff pretzel legs as my legs flopped over during my nap. This year, while the race was harder on my body, I don’t have those “screw running” feelings. Not having those 4 long runs leading up to today’s 20 miler really made it harder, but with a little help from my friends, I finished. It wasn’t a pretty finish and it wasn’t a strong finish, but I finished. Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 10 Wrap-up (Track, Athletes Serving Athletes Training Run, & 20 Mile Prep)
I’m here! I’m here! Sorry, it’s been a pretty crazy week and I’ve slacked off on my blogging a little bit. Putting in 12 – 16 hour days at the office just doesn’t leave much time for writing. The few moments I have free are dedicated to eating, sleeping, and running. So, let’s catch up! Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 10 Long Run, Part 2 (10.44 miles – Applause!)
What can I say? Another beautiful morning and another fantastic run! I cherish these runs and embrace them because I know the next run might not be so great. After the past couple weeks, I really needed a weekend like this and I truly feel blessed to have been given it. I was actually very emotional when I told my husband how I wish he could experience feeling so good. He has serious back problems and is in pain all the time and I would give him a years worth of excellent runs for him to feel this way just for a moment. Everyone deserves to feel this good. Continue reading
MCM Training – Week 10 Long Run, Part 1 (6 miles – hear me roar!)
See this face? This is a face of a very happy runner!
MCM Training – Week 9 (The Butt Massage)
We’re winding down on Week 9 and I’m still recovering. I’ve been trying to keep myself active with going to the gym, but I really do miss my runs. This morning I went to the track with a friend and did a jog/walk for 3.25 miles. IT WAS FANTASTIC and I felt great! Unfortunately, my calf is still sore, so my doctor has ordered an MRI. Weekend of Rest Can Make the Mind Go Numb
Well, the title says it all. I tried to make the best out of the weekend and I guess it wasn’t really that bad, but boy did I really miss my long run. I went out for a short 3 mile stroll along the NCR with my husband and watched all the runners come and go, then I napped and napped some more. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be laid up for weeks upon weeks. My husband was laid up for 4 months after he tore his pec completely off while weight training. It drove him insane and I can see why. It’s not that I’m not able to do anything, it’s that I’m not able to do what I WANT to do. Ok, enough about my whining…I really don’t deserve it. I’m just being a brat and I apologize. I really am grateful that I’ll be out there really soon. Really, I am!!! Continue reading
